Saturday Night at the Movies, Part 2

This week we bring you an absolute California classic: Chinatown.  Combining noir and ruthless water politics, the movie cuts to the core of the Angeleno experience.  Chinatown serves as a reminder of all the harsh realities that coexist with California's incredible potential.  It also serves in that sense as a huge symbol of hope.  If we reclaim the public good, if we treat water as a resource held in common for all Californians  and not as a vehicle for pure ambition, we can finally confront the noir underbelly of the California Dream head on.  Maybe then, we can write our own ending to this classic: Remember it, Jake.  It's Chinatown.  But we're California.
